WALL IS IN THE RACE

Holmdel Township Committeeman Terence Wall has announced his candidacy for freeholder. GOP committee members have reported being robo-called with a message from Wall's wife, Jeanne.
The message states that Wall, a supporter of Freeholder Theodore J. Narozanick, waited until Narozanick announced his decision not to run for another term before declaring his candidacy.

dear mr. roosevelt and "airbather":

so it looks like terence does have a fan club after all.

are there meetings and t-shirts or is it just a signed picture and a button you can wear on your jacket?

i think terence has a lot of experience in county committee contests and when it comes to running against a kleinberg or someone from ocean no one has ever heard of he has to be taken seriously. the "hardliners" i've seen in the gop are long on talk and short on walk. propoganda stuff hasn't been winning you boys many elections, but i'm sure that doing more of the same is going to change all of that.

here's a thought: if terence had all that many detractors, he wouldn't have been able to deliver fred's election.

he can be beaten, just not by anyone who is on the board right now. he's a known quantity to the county committee. the other names so far aren't. and frankly, the gop's bench is pretty shallow these days. must be y'all ran a few too many people "out on a rail" after a good, sound "tarring and feathering."

maybe a good strategy is to tar and feather everyone who doesn't agree with fred and the "let us redevelop your town" crew. i'm sure that strategy is working. winning is really secondary to "ideology."

hey, i know what can stop all of this: toilet humor. That will do it! maybe call him "smelly terence" (did i just trip upon a campaign strategy?). indeed, call him names AND don't talk to him in the cafeteria either...that'll show him.

by the way, this is just a question. if terence is responsible for turning holmdel democrat, then how come he's the most veteran member of the governing body?

yes, it must be the voting machines. did you say "dangling chads"? good gravy, something has to be done about this!

i agree, kleinberg or the nameless ocean guy. that's the ticket. i'm sure that will work out swell.

Positive Campaigns RULE

William H Seward said...

There's no question that Terence is controversial. He is also well known and knows how to run a campaign. He could win the nomination, but I'm not convinced he can win in November.

I'd like to see Bob McKenna, Tom Ball and Mel Hall enter this race.

Teddy Roosevelt

Why the venom towards Terence Wall? He has been a good friend to many throughout the County. He has been elected and re-elected. Has he made mistakes, we all have. But no running out of town, no tar and feathering. Teddy support who you like. Perhaps you could adopt the attitude of the "new Cicero". Try your hardest to speak well of those you favor and fairly critize those you don't on policy. But I think name-calling demeans they speaker as well as the target. Two adages:"Speak softly and carry a big stick + beat a dog get a mean dog". Leave the big stick in the closet.

TR, I removed your pose on request of a commenter who I believe to be close to the candidate. It went a little over the top with some of the adjectives used.
There are certainly many items where Wall can be criticized, but let's not bring back a "Howellanche" environment here.

Mr Purcell all I can say is you are a bad judge of character.
Terrance Wall would destroy the GOP.
To put it simply he is a bad person and character does count.
By the way It is a stretch to say he delivered Freds election.

Old Hickory said...

Please, PLEEEEEEEEASE, nominate this man!

JIM_PURCELL said...

no, it's really not a stretch to say he delivered fred's election.

terence was one of several. the same could be said of john bennett, bob mckenna, jim gianell, mel hood, bill dangler, the lanes, steve grossman, norine kelly and mary foley.

it wasn't fred. it wasn't some omnipresent spirit. every committee person had to be called. press had to be handled. a web site had to be made. campaign volunteers (trustees) had to be lined up, assembled and announced.

there was a lot of media and a candidate who couldn't win his own district committee seat in wall township who aspired to replace the winningest gop chairman in the history of the county (who is also basically brilliant).

by the time that fred had gone anywhere to speak, every member of the republican committee from that town had already read a newspaper, been online or gotten a telephone call. and fred had absolutely nothing to do with that.

The chairmanship dropped into his lap off the hard work of good republicans. then he proceeded to basically spit in their face every chance he had, with notable exception.

Teddy Roosevelt said...

Abe, I fail to see why a post should be removed because some one complained about the adjectives used but it is your blog. Instead lets discuss a partial list about all the things Wall has done.
Ran a primary against Mike Arnone and Claire Farragher. Two loyal and good legislators. After Serena said she was running for freeholder he immediatly sent out a phone call on his Robo mailer saying he was supporting rosemary Peters. I then recieved a call from Rosemary where she said she had not even decided to run yet.
Then he made hideous allegations against Serena but never produced the proof he claimed to have.
He threatened people who lived in Holmdel who disagreed with him on a policy issue. He was censured by the Holmdel Council. He once circulated an email accussing a member of the party of stealing campaign materials, an allegation I found difficult to believe.
That is just the crap I have heard about.
Does anyone not on LSD or drunk really think the party should have anything to do with this guy.

JIM_PURCELL said...

You know, the GOP has a lot of shady characters in it. Terence doesn't make money off of politics like the leaches and crows that feed off of bonding or the engineering contracts or stuff like that.

He makes his living as an administrator, who is doing a good job for Keansburg, according to the folks I talked to there.

I don't know about this tape stuff, but I would like to know what the big deal is about primarying someone. In this day and age, everyone is getting primaried. No one clucked about Handlin primarying Joe Azzolina. It's just someone trying to get ahead. Maybe it was a little rude, but then again that was also a very long time ago.

As for the Holmdel infighting thing: Who really cares about it if Holmdel Republicans can't get along? That's internal stuff between people. If Terence ticked off Serena, so what? She ticks him off, he ticks her off...big deal.

Serena is a Holmdel phenomenon and that's great. But what does her being upset at something have to do with the price of tea in China when it comes to a county race?

Wall has put in a lot of time on the county scene working for the party. He has a lot of people that support him and he's done an awful lot for people in the party and for candidates that have asked his help.

Do you even know why he was censured in Holmdel? Perhaps you should do some investigative reporting. That is what you do isn't it?
He does not make money of Politics? How do you think he got the Job in Keansburg. Certainly not based on prior experience.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Jim Purcell, what do you mean you don't know about the tape stuff? It is a fairly significant story. You lose credibility by brushing it aside. Although your paper did not report the story, surely you have some knowledge of it. If not, just say so, this is a perfect forum for you to learn about it. As a Democrat and an ace reporter, you are also aware that Terence approached your Chairman and offered to run against Joe Kryllos, correct? Or do you not know anything about that either?

Yes, Wall especially did a lot for John Merla and his campaign for mayor here in Keyport. If we want to run Republicans who are going to make us all look like corrupt, slanderous, underhanded criminals, Wall's our man.

Interesting. Care to elaborate on that? I've heard similar stories, but no proof. If you have anything more could you back this up?

Jackie Corley said...

Yeah, Wall approached the Dem. chairman to primary Kyrillos the same way he manufactured a tape recording of Kyrillos, right? Both statements appeared in the same article. Except the second statement is patently false, so how much truth could the first have?

They were rumors that Ms. DiMaso threw out there haphazardly when, I assume, she felt like Wall had backed her into a corner.

It's highly unlikely that Wall would plan to challenge Kyrillos as a Democrat and then run as a Republican for freeholder. A little common sense, people -- come on. At least a rumor about Wall primarying Kyrillos would have run on a logical train of thought.

I find some Mon. Republicans Fear of Wall (FOW) strangely amusing. Reacting emotionally hasn't gotten you guys anywhere. You were so eager to throw out Dowd that you didn't think it through and woundup with Chairman Spray-on Tan over there.

If you're gonna criticize Wall put something of substance there, not this weird paranoia that pervades. Some element of a thoughtful debate or well-thought out criticism would go a long way to getting your point across (see Abe's Clarence Hall parody).

JIM_PURCELL said...

OK for all those interested... Terence Wall has not approached Victor Scudiery about running as a democrat in any way. I know victor, I asked victor and victor doesn;'t know what i was talking about.

the tapes: whuat i meant is that i haven't really vested any time into it. there wasn't a story there for me without the tapes themselves. so i wasn't going to print anything based on a rather public argument that didn't amount to anything. with that said, i don't know that there aren't tapes but the whole thing seems kind of peripheral.

everyone in this thing has done or said something that has ticked someone else off. who gets their feathers ruffled along the way isn't really a big deal.

but there is politics and then there is governance. terence plays politics hard, maybe harder than some people would like, but at the end of the day he has a good voting record in holmdel and he has done some good things in his town and in the county. as for keansburg, he's doing a good job there.

ask any good administrator, who does it for a living, if they are in politics and they'll tell you "no." They are in the business of government. terence is a town manager and that's government. frankly, having spoken to several administrators about the keansburg job while it was still pending, i was told that "no administrator of any background would take the job the way it is." well, he's had success and that's clear.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Jackie,
For a gal who laments "reacting emotionally" and calls for "more substance," your shots at Fred are ironic, not to mention gratuitous and amatuerish. You're better than that.

As for the so-called Fear of Wall: sure we fear him. We fear he will turn the GOP into a minority party in Monmouth County, just as he had done in Holmdel.

Lest anyone argue that he is the "senior" member of the Committee, I would simply state that timing is everything. He wrecked the GOP there, and it is only now starting to recover - without him.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Abe,

Vic is smart to deny the story. Like Union Beach Democrat boss Jim Purcell, Vic is licking his chops at the prospect of Barbara McMorrow facing Terence in the general. Its no wonder he is receiving so much support from the Donkeys. Smart politics!

I suppose a crack reporter who works for a newspaper also followed up and asked if there was anyone else at the meeting.

Jim - you really think that Terence blasting Serena as racist and claiming to have tapes but then never producing a tape is nothing more than "peripheral???" WOW! Good one, big guy.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Jim Purcell - Double standard alert! You don't know that there aren't tapes. WHY? Because, ostensibly you have not seen nor heard tapes, because Terence has not produced them. Yet still you hold out doubt....interesting!

On the other hand, you are SURE that Terence never approached your Chairman, because you know your Chairman and you believe what he says. Fair enought, thats your right, and he is your Chairman, so you should trust him.

Jim - you were not at the meeting, nor have you ever seen or heard the tapes. To be fair, if you are going to say definitively that the meeting never happened, what you ought to then say is, "the tapes are a lie until Terence produces them." Be fair, my friend!

I probably shouldn't have been so flip, but I couldn't help myself before clicking the comment box.

But honestly, how does a chairman show up to a Republican Unity Rally with Doug Forrester as the keynote speaker, have on Bermuda shorts and sunglasses and expect to ever be taken seriously?

Honest Abe said...

Before the "Holmdellanche" goes any further...

Elephants_not_donkeys, do you in fact have anything to verify about this alleged meeting between Terence Wall and Vic Scudiery? You say that Jim Purcell wasn't there; were you? Facts, please?

Jackie Corley said...

"But honestly, how does a chairman show up to a Republican Unity Rally with Doug Forrester as the keynote speaker, have on Bermuda shorts and sunglasses and expect to ever be taken seriously? "

If fainess to Fred, that is something of MCGOP Chair tradition. I've seen Dowd similarly dressed. At least Fred's hair was combed.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Honest,

I know of at least three people who were alledgedly at the meeting. To be fair to them (and you) I will not divulge their names without their permission. I will, however, go about the arduous task of seeking their permission, or better yet, inviting them to post their own comments on your blog.

Until that happens, I will refrain from bringing up the "alleged" meeting. But my point to Jim Purcell remains the same: if the meeting has not happened until something materializes to suggest it has, then fairness demands that the tapes DO NOT EXIST until something (or someone) produces them.

It is less than fair to hold out doubt (hope??) that tapes exist despite Terence not producing them under heavy criticism from Greg Bean of the Independent. Jim Purcell ought to admit at least that - it is not an outrageous request of a supposedly impartial journalist.

Elephants_not_donkeys said...

Jackie,

Once again, your critiques are "ad hominum" which really waters down the rest of your points and indicates a more personal stake in your comments.

Fred's appearance, like everyone else's, is a personal matter. Let's not even go there.

A little civility, and keeping your comments on point, will go a long way in maintaining the credibility you've worked hard for.

First off, I keep hearing about how I'm the Democratic Chairman of Union Beach: I am not, that is Ken Connors. I am a former Democratic Chairman of Union Beach. I turned the job over to Ken. My part was just re-establishing the party there as an entity to give people a choice. After that, I stepped away.

I was a long-time Republican and I worked on behalf of Republicans at every level of organization for many years before I became a Democrat. I became a Democrat becuase this administration (county and state) have issues in my opinion, that I knew as fact and I wasn't going to live with it. I have no "vendetta" against Republicans...they're most of my friends. It's just I'm not going to be in the same party as some of the crooks I'm aware of.

With that said, most Republicans are great people and great Americans...only a small fraction are not (like the Dems). But, I know a lot of the crooks in the GOP and a lot of those are in Monmouth (dispersed among good Republicans and good Americans). All of this "Thou shall speak no harm..." nonsense is garbage.

Still, I would rather a good Repubilcan won rather than a bad Democrat and I would want a good Democrat defeat a bad Republican. The best of all worlds is served by four good candidates for office, any one of whom are worthy to serve and deserve to do so.

So, I comment on both sides of the aisle based on what I know about candidates, irrespective of affiliation.

The tapes...I didn't report on them in the newspaper. Why would I do so in any other outlet? It's not an issue for me... either against Mayor DiMaso or against Committeeman Wall. It's a feud. I haven't commented on any internal feuds in towns, despite this being relatively good "gossip." Frankly, I don't see how gossip helps select people. Everyone has someone that doesn't like them...so what? I've even heard a few people don't like me and I don't lose any sleep.

Serena and Terence don't like each other. OK, got it. Next... He said this, she said that -- it's a distraction.

In this environment, Republicans are far more likely to attack each other rather than Democrats (first-hand on that one). As a strategy, it isn't sensible. By the way, neither is putting up caniddates with financial interests directly tied to office (and that's happening). Guys like Wall, DeSeno and some others in the field aren't going to tie politics and making money. That's something to think about.

Honest Abe said...

Okay, folks. I believe everything that could be said on this thread has been. It's getting repetitious.
Terence Wall is a controversial individual and right or wrong he is comfortable in his own skin.
As we move toward the convention issues will be raised relative to him as well as the other candidates. Each candidate will have the opportunity to deal with the issues.
To those of you who don't think Wall should be a candidate for freeholder this year, if you're County Committee, vote for another candidate. It's that simple.
Terence Wall has left his phone number here if anybody has any questions. If you're interested, he encourages you to call him.
