THE RACE FOR FREEHOLDER

Four people have filed letters of intent with Chairman Adam Puharic for this year's freeholder race. They are:

  • Robert D. Clifton - Incumbent freeholder, former Mayor of Matawan. Clifton is completing his first three - year term on the board.
  • Anna C. Little - Incumbent Freeholder, former Highlands Borough Councilwoman. She is completing the one - year unexpired term of Amy H. Handlin, who resigned from the Board after taking a seat in the State Assembly.
  • J. David Hiers - Ocean Township Committeeman, former fire chief. Hiers had thrown his hat in the ring last year, but later withdrew and endorsed the candidacy of Howell Mayor Joseph DiBella.
  • Brian J. Reilly - Spring Lake Borough Councilman. Reilly also ran last year; after being defeated on the first ballot at the April 8th Convention he endorsed Andrew Lucas, who got the nomination.
  • A possible fifth candidate may file with Puharic today. UPDATE! Will Seward says it might be Freehold Township Committeeman Anthony Ammiano, who served as Mayor for 2006. UPDATED UPDATE!!! It's Marlboro Township Committeeman Jeff Cantor.
The Steering Committee will meet on Saturday, February 17th and select two candidates for each open position; those names will then be voted on at the County Convention on Saturday March 24th.
Candidates are expected to undergo background checks, for which they are asked to pay up to $1,000. There was talk that it would be up to $2,000, but the amount has been clarified in today's (2/2/07) Asbury Park Press by Chairman Puharic.

Abe, Abe, Abe. A possible 5th candidate? Get real. There will bee a 5th candidate. That gives Puharic the way to dump Little beefore the convention. As long as there's only 4, she goes to the convention. I wouldn't bee surprised if there was even 6 candidates, to bee sure to dump Clifton too.I bet they try and go with Howell again too. Dibella, Shoemaker, Tobasco, one of them. You watch.

Well, that's moot here, John-John. Tobasco isn't in this race. The fifth was Jeff Cantor from Marlboro.

Does actively seeking candidates to run for a seat disqualify a screening member?? I have heard from numerous independent sources that Sal A. and many others were actively looking for candidate #5 over the past week. One was even pretty much guaranteed the line from the chairman. ( Yes some members of the screening committee are starting to talk)

Also, there have been slanderous statements made about certain candidates to/and between the screening committee. Some have even said that our fair chairman is responsible for the statements. If that is the case, I believe an explanation is in order.

loyal republicans don't run against incumbents, unless there has been a problem.I don't see any problems with Rob or Anna and wish them the best of luck.If our party continues along this path,we will soon be in the minority.Shame on all those that want change when it isn't needed

It is really disgusting what the Chairman and his cronies on the screening committee have been doing and saying not so far behind the scenes.

The Chairman promised to unite the party, and he will succeed. It will be a smaller party and an out of power party, but it will be united.

A thousnd bucks for a background check? Puharic is getting ripped off. But then he's getting ripped ofrf at $800+ for his internet service too.
Hiers has a temper. Last year he really went off on some citizen at a meeting. Made the papers and all. Do you know if he's related to Bob Hiers from Keyport?

It matters not a whit the candidates put forward by your party. They will be summarily defeated.

William H. Seward is delving deeply into the Steering Committee. I'm sure he will find out all the answers to your questions.

Maybe the website has a lot of bells & whistles. It probably covers the Wireside Chats, too.

Which paper? What date? Do you have the issue?

Do you know if he's related to Bob Hiers from Keyport?

If you mean the late Bob Hyer from Keyport, I highly doubt that they're related.

If we have the right candidates and are united, your wish will not come true!

Hey 'big professor', how are your Democrats working out in Trenton? You think those are the kind that will win in Monmouth?

The Big Professor lives in a cloistered, ivory tower world of academia. He seems to have no concept of reality.
One of his more "memorable" posts involves his veneration of convicted felon John Lynch, who the prof feels should be governor.
He makes the rounds of the blogs about monthly, although this is the first time he's been around in a while. Check out some interesting responses to him here on Trochilus' blog (scroll down to comments).
Sometimes I just reject the Prof's comments, but others I publish so people can see just what's indoctrinating their kids in college.

I'm sure Joe DiBella is hoping for a seat and is probably already telling folks that he almost had it but 'politics' made him lose by a narrow margin. He doesn't get it. Since his last run he has made so many new enemies that he is politically non-existant. I think even his backers have seen the light and backed off of him.

Tobasco is going nowhere for awhile. He needs to go through whatever bad times he is facing. And we don't even know if he will remain a county resident. He's on the shelf for awhile. He also needs considerable grooming and to get off the coffee before meetings. Jitters and constant motion are a real distraction from whatever good he brings to the table.

Schomaker is preening and grooming herself for a move up the political ladder. This is pretty obvious. Maybe too obvious. One has to ask what she has to offer? I think there are so many more well-qualified women in the county who are not as condescending and snide under pressure.

That's just my two cents...
