In all the hubbub generated by the unprecedented turnout of candidates for freeholder, another race has been a-brewin', that for Chairman of the Monmouth County Republican Committee.
County Chairman Fredrick P. Niemann is expected to seek another two-year term, and it appears that he will have competition for the job. Two names are mentioned in an article by Jim Purcell in this week's Courier, Mel Hood of Neptune Township, and former Freeholder Ed Stominski of Eatontown.
Niemann was elected chairman two years ago on a platform of change which included regional directors and by-laws. Neither reform has been enacted and a number of Republicans believe it is time to choose a chairman who will enact such changes. Niemann has also been subject to criticism as to his close ties with Ocean County GOP Chairman George Gilmore, as well as his fundraising record, which includes contributions from Middlesex Democrat Boss John Lynch, Jr., among others.
Hood and Stominski both support the concept of regional directors and by-laws.
The election of a county chairman is not to be taken lightly; it cannot be a popularity contest. If there is to be opposition to Niemann it must be united and issue-oriented. It must not degenerate to personalities. They should unite behind one individual. Committee members must be convinced of the need for a change. If not, Niemann wins by default.
Niemann, if he is to survive, must be prepared to explain his actions on fundraising, as well as the lack of by-laws and regional directors. He needs to explain the connection with Gilmore. He must convince the committee that his reasons for his actions were in the best interests of the GOP as a body. Pointing to a win in spite of the scandals 2005 is not enough, as other factors may explain that. Quality candidates, the Unger factor, etc.
Other names mentioned in connection with June's chairman election are former Wall Mayor Robert McKenna and former County Chairman Frederick Kniesler.
It promises to be interesting.

Stominski?Kniesler?
Why don't we just prop Harry Larrison up and elect him Chairman.
Hey, it worked in Weekend at Bernies.
The man who truly put Fred in office should be the man who is the new chair.
guess who that is?
John Bennett?
The answer to that question is Bill Dowd. The only reason Fred became Chairman wasn't because of any one yahoo's efforts from that change group, it was Bill Dowd because nobody wanted him anymore, but nobody else wanted the job either.
Who pulled the pieces together? Still can't guess it?
Who propped up the empty suit?
Who?
It's the nicest way to put it - Fred is really a simple empty suit.
Typical troll for legal business
No leadership
No values
No bylaws
No credibility
I would absolutely love to see Tom Powers become chair. Has he shown any interest in the position?
Just like camden and essex, that's what I do, I wake up every morning wishing my county was more like camden and essex. Instead of cities like Freehold, Middletown and Rumson I want to live next to Patterson, where they danced in the street's on 9/11, and Newark, perhaps the most corrupt city EVER! Oh, yeah! That's what I looking forward to. More Democratic idiocy, like giving needles to drug addicts so that they can OD easier. You Democrats are pathetic, but even that is an insult to the word pathetic.
"anonymous"...you don't really know.
about "thegroup"... dream on. it did the work. most others watched.
if tom powers were chair...he'd put his kids in appointed office, in my experience. no he's not the guy. never was. he hung on to whoever.
"big professor"...you are truly a putz. thanks for playing.
elect who ever gets the by laws enacted!
"if tom powers were chair...he'd put his kids in appointed office, in my experience."
yeah, you mean just like the new dems in matawan - mommy, daddy, daughter, brother - I absolutely agree
Ted Narozanick for Chairman.
So will Lincoln Day be a ticket sales disaster again this year?
Most are just saying NO to wasting money on it.
tom powers?????
see first comment above.
Bennett?...Powers?...Stominski?
Why don't we just declare the organization defunct and get it over with?
Nieman has been honest and hard working. He has been open and available. He has been a good chair. He is not perfect but nobidy is. He has done an awful lot to help get the party back together. He deserves another term. We should stop with attacking one another out here as all the unsigned people are all just Democrats that are planst to get us to attack one another so it can be used against us all at a later date. Give Fred another chance. It was Boll Dowd that turned on Ed so that is not Fred's fault.
Kniesler for chair? That was a joke, right?
wow, lots of people on here should go into stand up?
Fred campaigned on by-laws.
Fred is a liar
Fred is the best chair since Danskin and I have known them all. He has to deal with the "gang on the Hill" who think County Government is just fine, the disgruntled Bayshore faction who is cyring over the Merla Mess, the fact that Dowd left the place broke and a mess, the Popkin crowd who think they are smarter than anyone else, the Burry issue (she has turned out to be a big flake) and many more issues. The man deserves a break. What has he done wrong other than disagree with the Lanes(which is a good thing to many)?
He won many local races, has gotten a lot of people involved, many more woman than ever before, returns calls, answers his emails and much more.
Stominsky as chair would be a freal show. Give the guy a break and for a minute sit back and look at what the job takes of him personally and professionally.
Sounds like Gallic wrote this as pro Fred. Hey Dan, go make some calls for your candidate.
"What has he done wrong other than disagree with the Lanes(which is a good thing to many)?"
He hasn't proposed by laws as promised.
So over the issue of by-laws he should be thrown out? How ill having by -laws now help us win in November? Lets focus on winning and not cry baby issues that mean nothing in the real grand scheme of things. What else has he done that is so bad? Leave the man alone and let him win!
Licoln Day ads have outpaced last years ad journal by over 85%. This years book will be over 110 pages. Last year was about 70 with at least ten pages dedicated to Merla buddies that never paid.
Sound like Licoln Day is going to be a huge success. Even without the 10 people who are boycotting it from the Affiliated.
Sound like Fred and the whole Licoln Day Committee, headed up by Tom and Serena, did a great job. Major thanks to Joe Locchio (sp?) committeeman from Manalapan.
Who needs by laws anyway? Keeping promises is just so over rated.
Now attacking Gerri Popkin. Does it dawn on the Fred toadies that she was able to get Lillian on the Board of Freeholders because people like her. She was instrumental in putting Fred in. Then like the two-faced pretender he is he turned on her. Now his evil little minions attack her. PATHETIC!
Licoln (sic) Day???????
If you can't spell it, don't go. And don't say it's a typo because you used the same spelling 4 times.
Twit.
Ok folks, we are getting off topic? What the heck do the last few posts have to do with the county chairman position? Hey, great way to change topic I guess.
So.... Anyone care to address the Gilmore connection? Lynch (Alma Ltd.) donations?
ok then, let's just put it like this then...fred sucks as a chairman. he gets money from the state to fund his organization and bill never did. he installed a lot of out-of-county schundler cast-offs who need a home after grounding bret and he's isolated everyone who has ever won an election based on hard work. so, he has lost lost 2 races of his own (surrogate and republican committeeman). he lost in manalapan, he lost in the shore towns. he lost to panter... and he was supposed to win that one. he got into the whole dibella thing and didn't even care about anyone else's point of view. before that he got everyone involved in the azzolina and handlin thing and screwed things up there too.
fact is he just doesn't know what the hell he's doing.
Post links. Not entire articles.
Honest Abe,
Thanks for removing offensive posts....
Sue,
Thanks for having my back on this....
I can take the punishment handed down by anonymous posters. Nothing worse than I've already been through with fighting overdevelopment in Howell.
What doesn't kill you, makes you a stronger person......
See you Monday....
Since this post was about Chairman, maybe we can get back on point. I understand that the soon to be announced candidate is the chair of Red Bank, Mr. Ginnell. Decent guy with good experience. He ran Jen Beck's campaign for assembly and she won after all. He may be the new voice we need and he belives in by-laws and regional managers. He will also ge rid of Dan Galic. The two people that have announced so far cannot win. Ginnell can win.
Are you kidding me, Gianell? LOL! And he most certainly had nothing to do with Jen Beck's campaign. Where do you people get your info from?
Jim Ginnell fought for Jen. He knocked on doors for her and he worked his tail off. He is doing the same for Anna Little and this will pay dividens. Jim can bring people together and would be a great chair. What did Fred do for Jen? Jim helped her to win and she learned a lot under him. We all could.
Can't Howell just stop with this. This topic is about Chairman. Jim Ginell would be very effective. What he did for Jen Beck he can do for Anna Little, who is working through Jim. If no Jim, no Jen Beck. Jim believes in by laws, regional directors and no Galic. He needs to be drafted and to run if he is still undecided but I hear he is going to run.
Jim Ginell would be a fine chairman. I hear John Ekdal is planning to throw his hat in the ring for Chairman. Good guy. Can raise money.
Abe, thanks for clearing that up and cleaning up the posts. I agree with anonymous. Let's get back to talking about who would be a good chair for MC GOP.
If everybody runs, wont Fred win?
The new chair will be Ted Narozanick. Ted should have been Director and was overlooked. People should not over look his popularity. Chair would be easier than having to campaign for Freeholder and he can bring balance back to the "force". Watch Ted!
<~Ted ~Ginell ~Ekdahl>
Ted was a great freeholder and a great patriot, but it is time for him to retire gracefully. Let him enjoy his leisure. He is such a good speaker that he could get paid to work on a speakers circuit.
He did have a little trouble with his heart a few years ago. None of us know when our hearts will give out. That could be a very big problem for the County Republicans if we have to replace Ted.
Jim Ginell is a nice guy. He and Gerri Popkin make a nice couple.
Jim may be for bylaws and regional directors...just so long as he and Gerri get to pick both the bylaws and the directors.
I'm surprised that Jim was so instrumental in Jen Beck's assembly victory. My sources tell me he was forced to support her since she was from his town. He wasn't that enthralled with her at all.
I thought that Kevin Israel ran the Jen Beck/Declan O'Scanlon assembly campaign. If Jim Ginell was the heart and soul of the campaign, I wish he did a little better for Declan.
Jim And Gerri are wannabe powerbrokers. They mean well but they also think they know better than everyone else (and they let you know it).
John Ekdahl?? He's a nice guy. Enough said about that. Chairman??? You're kidding right??
Oh Yes! Ed Stominski? He really wasn't well thought of when he worked for JCP&L. Many of the employees across the board thought he was a bit of a blowhard and a "hurray for me and screw you" type of guy. He's retired from JCP&L and from the Parkway Authority and the Board of Freeholders - that's enough.
Now Loretta Stominski - YES!
Fred Kneisler? A nice guy who did a good job after Ben Danskin - but that was several decades ago. He's now the historian over there in Upper Freehold and he's doing a very good job there. He doesn't need to get involved at this stage of the game.
The problem I see is that if we don't keep Neimann then we start going down the slippery slope with a lot of wannabes vying for the chairman's job every two years. That scenario will kill the Republicans in Monmouth County (with the help of the Asbury Park Press to the benefit of the Democrats). And we will live just long enough to wish we never did. "Be careful what you wish for... you just might get it".
We have enough outside trouble coming down the pike from the democrats and we sure don't need to be helping them shovel us into our own grave. If you want to get retire Neimann don't do it this year. We need stability. We have to be about the business of winning - not whining (and losing).
I have removed all off-topic and inappropriate comments.
